Let’s Be Kind; Let’s Be Like Jesus

It’s been a very busy retreat season for me, and honestly, I’m wiped. But I’m so grateful for the ways I watched God transform women’s lives this fall. Isn’t He faithful?

Meanwhile, coming off this hectic season, I am faced head-on with the divisiveness of the midterm elections taking place tomorrow. A few days ago, I took a bold step and offered a few thoughts on where I stand regarding the amendments on the ballot here in Virginia.

And I was pleasantly surprised by the response that followed! Everyone who commented (and there were over 90 comments!) was kind and thoughtful. We didn’t all agree, but we were kind. And that made my weary heart feel hopeful.

I’ve experienced being canceled by my dearest friend because of her assumptions about our political differences. (She still refuses to have a conversation with me, so I’m not even sure what she thinks!) So I was prepared for the rhetoric and banter to mimic what we’re constantly being told: that we can’t get along if we don’t agree. Once again, I was pleasantly surprised.

Although the issues on the ballot are very important and could directly impact our lives, my friends chose to respond with kindness. (One even offered to pray for another’s family member who is struggling.) In the middle of division, can we find what we have in common and hold onto hope together?

At the end of the day, I was reminded that both sides want what is best for people. We all want human lives to be counted, valued, and protected. And we all agreed that when the votes are counted, Jesus is still sovereign and can work through whatever outcomes we find ourselves facing tomorrow night.

No matter the results, my prayer is that we will continue to be kind, respectful, and hopeful.

And thank you to my friends who engaged so thoughtfully and kindly. You are the best!
